Lübbenwald Swamp
The Lübbenwald Swamp' is a vast inland delta formed in the region where the Lübben river flows into the Dossel. As the Dossel is one of the most important riverways of the Flannish Cities, the city of Hogenrood has committed considerable resources to clearing a broad canal through the swam with a small flotilla of dredge ships. A series of signal towers and a number of fortress-islands - from where explorers can venture deeper into the swamp - help ensure that attacks on the valuable river trade are kept to an acceptable level. However, due to the vast size of the swamp and its near-impenetrable tree cover truly "clearing it up" is effectively impossible.
The swamp is home to innumerable Wildling settlements, consisting mainly of human, goblin, and halfling villages which can only be reached by boats through the innumerable small waterways which only the locals know how to navigate. Some are open to trade, while others prefer to maintain their isolation from outsiders. A sizeable number are actively allied with various bands of river pirates, while others are at least willing to ignore the pirates as long as they only attack outsiders.
There have been a few attempts by Hogenrood to build additional drainage canals in the south in the hopes of draining the swamp in its entirety, but this has met with violent retribution from the inhabitants of the Lübbenwald, and was ultimately abandoned.
{{DesignersNotes|This area is vaguely inspired by the Spreewald forest, although vastly larger in size - and with the added complication that it sits on a major trade artery.[1]
