One of the oldest parts of the city, Chafring still has has many intact buildings dating back to feudal times. This has traditionally been a neighborhood where craftsmen have plied their trades, and though the monopolies of the guilds are long gone, some craftsmen remain. Since more and more goods are created in the big factories, the market cannot support many individual artisans, but those few tend to be well paid, since owning a hand-crafted item made by a master craftsman is considered a status symbol by many of the rich families. The quaint local atmosphere and the ancient buildings are popular with tourists, and some new pubs and restaurants now cater to them.
