When the fires of the Liberation War died down, Bodenwald was the only of the Flannish Cities where a monarchy remained. In order to reastablish peace, Bodenwald accepted a compromise during the negotiations for the Treaty of Praxus: It would be allowed to retain a constitutional monarchy where the powers of the king or queen would be limited by an elected partliament. Furthermore, its aristocrats would be allowed to retain their names as courtesy titles without any formal legal power. In the time since, Bodenwald has gradually transformed from a remote backwater into an economic powerhouse, benefiting from the vicinity of several major trade routes as well as the financial support of the Siebenbund and the manufacturing prowess of Gol Algor. It now supports the construction of a railroad line passing all the way through the Star Mountains to the north, while scholars, scientists, and explorers journey to distant planets under the umbrella of the Astromantische Gesellschaft.

Publishing

The publishing houses of Bodenwald produce a variety of fiction popular throughout the Flannish Cities. They largely focus on romances, emphasizing either the pastoral idylls of the high mountain meadows or the courts of the aristocratic pasts - though spurred on by the exploration of the Astromantische Gesellschaft, a growing sub-genre of romance features settings on other planets, usually featuring love between a daring explorer and a humanoid native of these worlds. Bodenwald also features a number of magazines publishing gossip about the local aristocracy and other rich and famous peoples, including their affairs, their excentric hobbies, and so forth.

History

Bodenwald lies within an ancient basin (the "Boden" or "Bottom") which was formed when a meteorite fell down to Rothea millions of years ago, which left the region flat when compared to the hills and mountains of the rest of the protectorate. This also resulted in splinters of Meteoric Iron scattered around the area, which is anathema to the fey - even today, the fey will not go near certain spots in the city-state. Later on several ice ages caused glaciers to cover their land, scattering moraine hills across the basin and eroding the crater rim.
