Grüngarten
Taking inspiration from the plant-shaping crafts of the nearby elves of Avareen, Grüngarten has become a master of agriculture and horticulture. While it is just as much of a metropolis with millions of inhabitants as the other Flannish Cities, its buildings are almost hidden beneath the numerous trees, greenhouses, and vertical farms covering most surfaces. Its fruits and vegetables are of the highest quality, and are exported far and wide.
Despite rumors, meat is not actually illegal in Grüngarten. However, it is heavily taxed, and animal husbandry is mainly seen as a necessary part of the agricultural cycles rather than a goal in its own right. Eating meat in public spaces is generally frowned upon, and many citizens are entirely vegetarian. However, this situation has lead to the growth of an organized crime ring called the "Butcher's Guild", who offers cheap meat-based food (of frequently dubious quality) in underground "meat parlors", which also offer other questionable entertainments. Persistent rumors claim that the enemy of the Butcher's Guild end up on the chopping block themselves.
The city of Grüngarten is geographically divided into an "upper city", built on the slopes of the Burgberg, a local hill, and the "lower city" comprising the rest of Grüngarten. The former is usually regarded as the better, wealthier region, but as it has already been thoroughly settled over the course of the centuries, many of the more spectacular newer constructions, such as the city's famous high-rise greenhouse farms, are located elsewhere.
